SECRETARY-GENERAL TO PROPOSE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GLOBAL COUNTER-TERRORISM STRATEGY
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will present his recommendations for a global counter-terrorism strategy to the General Assembly at 11:30 a.m. on 2 May. The document is part of the Secretary-General’s follow-up to the broader reform measures agreed at the 2005 World Summit.
Elements of a comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy were first proposed by the Secretary-General in March 2005. At the 2005 World Summit, world leaders welcomed his recommendations and asked the General Assembly to develop them further with the assistance of the Secretary-General. On the basis of the Secretary-General’s submission, Member States will begin consultations on a counter-terrorism strategy in the coming weeks. (The statement of the Secretary-General will be webcast.)
A background briefing on the report will be held at 11 a.m. in room S-226 on 2 May, by a senior United Nations official. The report will be posted on www.un.org/unitingagainstterrorism.
