Seminar on ‘Disaster Management – Building Resilience’

 

at Headquarters, 25 - 26 April

 


The United Nations University, Office at the United Nations, New York (UNU-ONY) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) are hosting the seminar “Disaster Management -- Building Resilience”, 25 April, 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., and 26 April 2006, 9:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m., Conference Room 8, the United Nations Headquarters.


The two-day seminar will include panel discussions and lectures with different experts in the field of disaster management to provide the latest trends and encourage dialogue about mitigating risk, vulnerability assessment, improving response and “building back better”.


Among the experts that are invited to speak at the two-day seminar are:  Joern Birkmann, Academic Officer, United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS); Sálvano Briceño, Director, International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR).; Juan Carlos Villagrán de León, Academic Officer, UNU-EHS; Klaus H. Jacob, Lamon-Doherty Observatory, Columbia University; Robert Piper, United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery; Jean-Luc Poncelet, Pan-American Health Organization; Michael Schultz, Deputy Permanent Observer, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; Alexandra Solovieva, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Asia-Pacific; Stefano Toscano, Permanent Mission of Switzerland; and Tammie Willcuts, Deputy Director for Emergency Operations, Save the Children.
