UNDPI PUBLIC SERVICE ADVERTISING AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED ON 26 JANUARY

PSAs on Poverty, Child Abuse and Traffic of Children to Receive Awards

Advertising agencies from Brazil, France and Indonesia will be honoured for public service advertising on Thursday evening, 26 January 2006, when the UNDPI Awards are presented at the International TV, Cinema and Radio Advertising Awards Ceremony in New York City.  Raymond Sommereyns, Director of the Outreach Division in the Department of Public Information, will present the awards.

The awards, jointly sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information and The New York Festivals, honour public service advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.

This year’s panel of judges reviewed work dealing with such United Nations issues as poverty, protection of the environment, HIV/AIDS and child labour.  The judges selected three public service advertisements/campaigns -– one print and two television -- to receive awards.

This year’s Gold UNDPI Award goes to Leo Burnett Publicidade Ltda ( Brazil) for “Favela”, a print ad to raise awareness about poverty.  The Silver UNDPI Award goes to Leo Burnett Paris ( France) for “The Hostages”, a campaign for Enfance et Partage, a non-governmental organization working on preventing child abuse.  The winner of the Bronze UNDPI Award is DDB Jakarta ( Indonesia), for “Supermarket Baby”, a television campaign about the trafficking of infants for adoption.

In addition to the winners, the following companies will be honoured as finalists:  Classic Partnership Advertising Dubai ( United Arab Emirates), AMP Radio Networks Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia), FCB Paris (France), and TBWA Berlin ( Germany).

The New York Festivals, founded in 1957, oversee six international awards competitions, in Film and Video, Television Programming and Promotions, Radio Programming and Promotions, Television and Radio Advertising, Design and Print Advertising, and Interactive Media.
