55th Meeting (AM)
Concluding current session, third committee approves draft decision
on programme planning concerning human rights
Concluding its work for the current session, the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) today approved without a vote a draft decision on “programme planning” (document A/C.3/61/L.62), as orally amended, which would have the General Assembly decide to approve programme 19 on human rights of the proposed strategic framework for period 2008-2009 (still to be issued).
The proposed strategic framework contained subprogrammes on human rights mainstreaming, right to development, research and analysis; supporting human rights bodies and organs; advisory services, technical cooperation and field activities; and support for human rights thematic fact-finding procedures. The document also included objectives and indicators of achievement for each sub-programme.
Noting the difficult and sensitive negotiations that had taken place on the subject, the Chairman thanked the Vice-Chair and Rapporteur for their tireless efforts in facilitating the discussions.
The Chair also expressed his thanks to all the members of the Bureau, for their efforts during the current session, and to all delegations for their cooperation and flexibility.
