DECOLONIZATION COMMITTEE TO SEND SPECIAL MISSION

TO TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS , 2 - 7 APRIL

A special United Nations mission led by Ambassador Julian R. Hunte of Saint Lucia, Chairman of the Special Committee on Decolonization, will be visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands from 2 to 7 April.  The objective of the mission is to gather information on the situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands first-hand and to assess the type of assistance the United Nations system could provide in the self-determination process of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Turks and Caicos Islands is a Non-Self-Governing Territory under the administration of the United Kingdom.  As administering Power, the United Kingdom is in charge of the Turks and Caicos Island’s foreign affairs and, as such, has approved the invitation extended to the Special Committee by the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In addition to the Ambassador of Saint Lucia, the delegation of the Special Committee includes the representatives of Fiji and Tunisia accompanied by a representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), an expert and a senior political affairs officer of the Department of Political Affairs.

The Special Committee delegation will meet with representatives of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government, political parties, administering Power and the public at large.  The Special Committee will inform the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands of the process of decolonization under the United Nations Charter and the mandate of the Special Committee.  The delegation will participate in interactive meetings organized by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government and will answer questions from the public.
