FIFTH United Nations-REPUBLIC OF KOREA CONFERENCE ON DISARMAMENT,
NON-PROLIFERATION, TAKING PLACE FROM 13 TO 15 DECEMBER
NEW YORK, 15 December (Department for Disarmament Affairs) -- The Fifth United Nations-Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Issues is taking place on Jeju Island, the Republic of Korea, from 13 to 15 December.
The Conference entitled “Beyond the Stalemate: Revitalizing Efforts to Curb the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Means of Delivery” is addressing, among other things, threats and challenges to the disarmament and non-proliferation regime in a global context, as well as in the regional context of North-East Asia. Participants will discuss the erosion of confidence in the effectiveness of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; weapons of mass destruction terrorism and non-compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency ’s recommendations and United Nations Security Council resolutions; as well as multilateral approaches to sensitive areas of the nuclear fuel cycle and strengthening export controls.
Approximately, 25 participants from Governments, academic and research institutes, and non-governmental organizations -- mainly from the Asia and the Pacific region; and international organizations will attend the conference in their personal capacity.
The meeting is supported by generous contributions of the Republic of Korea and interested non-governmental organizations.
