NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AZERBAIJAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Agshin Mehdiyev, the new Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Mehdiyev was his country’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe from February 2001 to October 2006.  Between 1993 and 2001, he held several posts, including Head of the Europe, USA and Canada Department in Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 1991 to 1992 he represented his country in Yemen.  From 1987 to 1991, he held various diplomatic positions in the Embassyy of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to that country when it was known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen, and also from 1977 to 1982, when it was called the Yemen Arab Republic.  Mr. Mehdiyev’s diplomatic career began in 1975 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After taking up oriental studies at the Azerbaijan State University, he later attended the Diplomatic Academy of the Soviet Union’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he obtained his PhD.  Fluent in English, Arabic, Russian and Turkish, he worked as a translator in the Soviet Embassy in Egypt from 1971 to 1975.

Born on 28 April 1949, Mr. Mehdiyev is married and has three children.
