Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SUDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad, the new Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Mr. Mohamad comes to the United Nations from his posting as Ambassador of the Sudan to the India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.  During his last posting at the Sudan Mission to the United Nations from 1982 to 1986, Mr. Mohamad had a range of responsibilities and represented his Government at several meetings of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and main Committees of the General Assembly.

A veteran diplomat who began his career with the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1975, Mr. Mohamed served in the Sudan Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1987 to 1989.  While Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission at Sudan’s Embassy in Ethiopia (1990 to 1995), he handled a wide range of duties, including bilateral relations with Ethiopia, conflict resolution matters and economic cooperation with the Organization of African Unity.  He also worked with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.  During the 1990’s, he was sent as a presidential envoy to Somalia in 1994 and as a Special Envoy to Afghanistan in May 2003.

In 1995, he returned to Sudan to serve as Director of the Africa Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1997.  He was Director of Technical and Economic Cooperation from 1997 to 1999.

He is a lecturer and author of many journal articles and he served as Dean of the African and Arab Group of Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to India.

Mr. Mohamad received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Khartoum in Sudan, 1975 and his master’s degree in international relations from Ohio University, United States, 1978.  He was declared a Doctorate Awardee in 2005 for research entitled “IGAD-SAARC:  A Comparative Study in Regional Cooperation and Integration”.
