New permanent representative of Liberia presents credentials

Liberia’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nathaniel Barnes, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Barnes was a founder and leader of Liberia’s Destiny Party and participated in his country’s Presidential campaign last year on the platform of reconciliation, positive change and self-reliance.  From 1999 to 2002, he was the chief architect of Liberia’s fiscal programme as the country’s Minister of Finance overseeing the implementation of a new tax code.  Mr. Barnes also served at the Ministry of Finance in 1998 to 1999 as the Coordinator of International Economic Cooperation and External Debt Management.  For a short time in 1999, he also held the position of Director General of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation.

Having started his professional career as an Underwriting Manager at the Property and Casualty Department of the Insurance Company of Africa in Monrovia, Liberia in 1979, Mr. Barnes then served in various professional positions at several companies in the United States, including NorTel, North American Wireless, Inc., and Aurora Solutions, Inc., 1981 to 1998.

Mr. Barnes has a Master of Business Administration in finance from Pace University in New York and a Bachelor of Science in finance and risk management from Rider College in New Jersey.

Born on April 6, 1954, he is married, with five children.
