New permanent representative of Namibia Presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Namibia to the United Nations, Kaire Munionganda Mbuende, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Mbuende worked as an independent consultant following an academic, political and diplomatic career.  He was also engaged in farming and various businesses.

Mr. Mbuende served two terms as a Member of Parliament, from 2000 to 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs between 2002 and 2004, and from 1990 to 1993, when he was Namibia’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Water and Rural Development.  From 1994 to 1999 he was Executive Secretary to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Between serving as Head of the Omaheke Regional Election Directorate of the South West African People’s Organisation (SWAPO) from 1989 to 1990 and Information Officer at SWAPO External Headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia, from 1974 to 1975, Mr. Mbuende held academic posts in Sweden and Denmark.

The author of numerous books and other works, he was educated in the United Republic of Tanzania and holds a bachelor’s degree, as well as a PhD from the University of Lund in Sweden.

Born in November 1953, Mr. Mbuende is married and has four children.
