Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Kuwait Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations, Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed Al-Murad, today presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Al-Murad served as Director of International Organizations in his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  He was Ambassador to India from August 1999 to January 2004, accredited also to Nepal and Bhutan.  Between August 1996 and July 1999, he was Ambassador to Turkey, with accreditation also to Azerbaijan (1997-1999).  Prior to that appointment, he was Ambassador to Venezuela from January 1993 to June 1996.

Mr. Al-Murad was first appointed a Director in the International Organizations Department in July 1991, serving until October 1992.  During Iraq’s occupation of his country and until its liberation (August 1990 – March 1991), he served as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Kuwait Embassy in Belgrade.  In March 1988, Mr. Al-Murad was assigned to the Foreign Ministry’s European Affairs Department and served in the Political Affairs Department from March 1987.

His other service included stints as Consul-General in Malaga, Spain (May 1987) and as Deputy Director in the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Department (November 1984).  He also served in Kuwait’s Paris embassy as First Secretary (1978), Second Secretary (1975) and Third Secretary (1974).  Beginning his diplomatic career in September 1972 as an attaché in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Al-Murad joined the Political Affairs Department in March 1973.

Born on 3 July 1947, he graduated from the Department of Political Science, University of Aix-Marseille, in France.  He is married and has four children.
