NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MAURITIUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS


Somduth Soborun, the new Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Soborun was his country’s Ambassador to Egypt and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ambassadors’ Group to Cairo, positions he held since August 2004.  From June 2003 to June 2004, he was Ambassador and Head of Multilateral Economic Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Regional Cooperation.  From January 2002 to May 2003, he was Minister Counsellor and Head of Multilateral Economic Directorate at the Ministry.


Before that, he was Chairman of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Deputy Chief of Missions and Experts Group in Washington, D.C.  From December 1999 to January 2001, he was Chargé d’Affaires at the Mauritius Embassy in Washington, D.C., after serving in two other positions at the Embassy.  He was Deputy Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1998.  Prior to that, Mr. Soborun served as Chargé d’Affaires at the Mauritius Mission to the United Nations.  In the early 1990s, he held posts at the Mauritius High Commission in Islamabad.


Prior to beginning his diplomatic career at the Mauritius Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988, Mr. Soborun was a teacher with the Ministry of Education and an instructor at the School of Business Studies and Accounting of Seychelles Polytechnic. 


Mr. Soborun earned an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi.  He also holds a Certificate in Conflict Prevention and Resolution from the Institute of Public Administration in Kuala Lumpur; Advanced Certificate in Diplomacy and Information Technology from the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies of the University of Malta; and a Certificate on Key Issues on International Economic Agenda from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.


Mr. Soborun was born on 27 June 1951 in Mauritius.  He is married and has two children.
