Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations, Robert Hill, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hill was a member of Australia’s Senate, where he represented South Australia from 1981 until the present. During that time, he held a number of senior Cabinet positions, including Minister for Defence (2001-2006), Minister for the Environment and Heritage (1998-2001), and Minister for the Environment (1996-1998). He was also Leader of the Government in the Senate from 1996 to 2006, and Leader of the Opposition from 1990 to 1996.
Before entering politics, Mr. Hill was a barrister and solicitor. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Adelaide, and a Master of Laws from the University of London.
Born on 25 September 1946, Mr. Hill is married and has four children.
