Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MOROCCO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

El Mostafa Sahel, the new Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sahel was his country’s Minister of Interior from 2 November 2002 until 15 February 2006.  Before that, he served as Prefect of the Rabat region in 2001-2002.

Between 1998 and 2001, Mr. Sahel was Chairman of the SOMED Investment Group (Moroccan-United Arab Emirates development company).  He was Morocco’s Minister for Maritime Fisheries, Administrative Affairs and Relations with Parliament in 1997-98, and Minister for Maritime Fisheries and Merchant Marine from 1993 to 1997.

Beginning his 25-year Government career in 1968, Mr. Sahel held various positions in the Ministry of Finance, including Head of the Department of Budget, Secretary-General of the Finance Ministry and Chief Executive Officer of the Communal Equipment Fund (County Councils Financing Bank).

He holds a Master of Laws from the Sorbonne in Paris, and a Bachelor of Arts in law from Rabat University.

Born in Morocco on 5 May 1946, Mr. Sahel is married and has two children.
