Secretary-General pleased by $5 mILLION nigerian donation to tsunami relief fund
The following statement is attributable to the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General was very pleased to receive this morning from President Olesegun Obasanjo of Nigeria a cheque for $5 million for the UN Tsunami Relief Fund.
President Obasanjo told the Secretary-General that the money came from voluntary contributions from the Nigerian people.
The Secretary-General feels that this donation from A developing country for the benefit of the many victims of last year’s tsunami is a laudable example of international solidarity.
He was also pleased to learn that the Nigerian Government had already donated $1 million towards relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina in the United States.
