SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS WILLIAM K. DAVIS OF UNITED STATES


AS DIRECTOR OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

 


United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is pleased to announce the appointment of William K. Davis as the new Director of the United Nations’ office in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Davis is an expert on international economic matters, human rights, development assistance, and peacekeeping.  Having worked in every administration since President Reagan, Mr. Davis comes to the post with a distinguished record of public service and extensive experience working with individuals across the political spectrum in Washington.


Prior to the appointment, Mr. Davis served in the United States Department of State, where he was responsible for relations with Congress on a range of foreign policy matters, including counter-narcotics, human rights, refugees, and post-conflict reconstruction.  Mr. Davis previously worked for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), where he served for three years as the head of public affairs of the OECD’s Washington office, working closely with officials throughout the United States Government, the media, and private sector.  He also worked at OECD headquarters as a liaison with the private sector, organized labour, and non-governmental organizations.  Prior to joining the OECD, Mr. Davis spent eight years at the White House and the State Department as a senior legislative aide.  He has also worked at the United States Treasury and Defence departments.


Mr. Davis graduated cum laude from DukeUniversity with a bachelor’s degree in political science.  He subsequently earned a master’s degree in public policy studies, also from DukeUniversity.  He is married with two children and resides in Bethesda, Maryland.
