SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS PIERRE SCHORI AS NEW
SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR CÔTE D’IVOIRE
The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Pierre Schori of Sweden to succeed Albert Tévoédjrè as his Special Representative for Côte d’Ivoire, effective 1 April 2005. Mr. Schori has been a Distinguished Visiting Professor at AdelphiUniversity in New York since 2004.
Mr. Schori served as Member of Parliament (1991-1994), Minister for International Development Cooperation and Deputy Minister for Cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe (1994-1996), and Minister for International Development Cooperation, Migration and Asylum Policy and Deputy Foreign Minister (1996-1999). Subsequently, Mr. Schori served as a Member of the European Parliament (1999-2000), where he was also the leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Group and Spokesperson for the Socialist Group on Foreign Affairs. Mr. Schori was the Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations (2000-2004).
Mr. Schori has authored several books, amongst others on the late Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, with whom he served early in his career as Foreign Policy Advisor (1973-1976), as well as numerous other publications on the United Nations, security policy, Africa and Latin America. Furthermore, Mr. Schori has served as a member of the International Commission for Central American Recovery and Development (the Sanford Commission, 1987-89), as the Head of the European Union Election Observation Mission in Zimbabwe (2000 and 2002), as Chair of the United Nations Committee for Parliamentarians for Global Action (2001-2004) and as Chairperson of the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, Egypt.
Mr. Schori was born in 1938 in Norrköping, Sweden. He graduated from the University of Lund (M.A 1962), and is fluent in Swedish, English, French and Spanish. Mr. Schori is married to Ms. Maud Edgren-Schori, and has three children.
