PRESS STATEMENT ON LIBERIAN ELECTIONS BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Following is today’s statement to the press on the Liberian elections by Security Council President Mihnea Ioan Motoc ( Romania):
Members of the Security Council were briefed today by Dmitry Titov, Director of the Africa Division, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, on the first round of presidential and legislative elections in Liberia held on 11 October.
Members of the Security Council welcomed the fact that the elections were held as scheduled in an orderly and peaceful manner. They commended and congratulated the large numbers of Liberians who demonstrated their commitment to rebuilding Liberia through democratic processes by participating in the elections. Council members expressed the hope that the counting of ballots and the announcement of election results will take place smoothly and in a peaceful atmosphere. They emphasized the crucial role of a successful electoral process in establishing peace, stability and prosperity in Liberia.
Members of the Security Council expressed appreciation for the dedicated and able efforts of the National Elections Commission, the United Nations Mission in Liberia and other multilateral and bilateral partners in the preparation of the elections.
Members of the Security Council called on all participants to maintain their commitment to non-violence and the democratic process throughout the second round of presidential elections, if one is necessary, and throughout the full electoral period.
