SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS

TO FORMER YUGOSLAVIA TRIBUNAL UNTIL 31 MARCH

The Security Council decided this afternoon to extend the deadline for nominations to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia until 31 March, thereby endorsing a suggestion by Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Transmitting the decision in a letter to the Secretary-General (document S/2005/159), Council President Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg (Brazil) said that the Secretary-General’s suggestion had been brought to the attention of Council members.

The meeting began at 1:10 p.m. and adjourned at 1:15 p.m.

In his letter to the Council (document S/2005/127), the Secretary-General forwarded 11 nominations submitted by Member States, pursuant to paragraph 1 of article 13 ter of the Tribunal’s statute, and noted that the number falls short of the minimum 54 nominations required under paragraph 1 (c) of article 13 ter of the statute.
