UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY TO HOLD SEMINAR ON LINK BETWEEN FOOD
SECURITY AND GENDER AT UN HEADQUARTERS, 10 NOVEMBER
The United Nations University (UNU) Office at the United Nations in New York and the UNU-World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) are organizing a workshop/brainstorming session entitled “Food Security and Gender: What is the link, What is at stake?” on 10 November 2005. It will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Conference Room E at UN Headquarters.
The event is to provide UNU-WIDER with intellectual inputs for the launch of its research project entitled Food Insecurity and Gender. It is part of the broader UNU-WIDER focus on the Millennium Development Goals with several ongoing research projects entitled Hunger and Food Security.
Taking part in the seminar, along with a number of eminent experts, will be: Basudeb Guha-Khasnobis, Research Fellow/Projector Director, Hunger and Food Security, UNU-WIDER, Helsinki; Florence Chenoweth, Director, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Liaison Office with the United Nations, New York; Supriya Banavalikar, Programme Associate, South Asia Programmes, Global Office, The Hunger Project, New York; and Carolyn Hannan, Director, Division for the Advancement of Women, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Serving as a starting point for the seminar will be a paper on “Women’s Status and Children’s Food Security in Pakistan” by Basudeb Guha-Khasnobis and Gautam Hazarika. United Nations media, United Nations staff, Permanent Missions and non-governmental organizations are invited to attend.
