“INREACH/OUTREACH” SERIES OF DISCUSSIONS TO BE LAUNCHED ON 23 JUNE

First Discussion, Entitled ‘The Charter:

A Framework for States, A Promise to Peoples’

The Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) will launch the Inreach/Outreach series of discussions on 23 June 2005 at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, United Nations Headquarters, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Inreach/Outreach series is being launched in the 60th anniversary year of the founding of the United Nations.  The series will kick off with the first discussion centring on the United Nations Charter, titled “The Charter:  A Framework for States, a Promise to Peoples”.

Speakers will reflect upon the Charter as it was drafted, as it has endured and as it will be measured in the future.  The discussion will be chaired by Raymond Sommereyns, Director, Outreach Division, DPI.  Panellists and topics will include:

Lawrence S. Finkelstein, professor and former assistant to Ralph Bunche in San Francisco in 1945 -- The Charter:  From Seed to System;

Tonya Gonella Frichner, President, American Indian Law Alliance -- The Entry of Indigenous Peoples into the UN;

Giuseppe Nesi, professor and legal advisor, Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations -- Security Council vs. State Sovereignty;

Cora Weiss, President, Hague Appeal for Peace -- Saving Succeeding Generations from the Scourge of War;

Guri Lie Zeckendorf, member, New York UN Association Advisory Board -- The Colonized World in 1945:  Expectations and Fulfilment.

The Inreach/Outreach series reflects a mission of the United Nations Department of Public Information’s Outreach Division to offer a forum where minds within and outside the Organization can meet, and where Member States, the Secretariat, and those less immediately involved in the United Nations’ day to day affairs, can listen to, and be enriched by the thoughts of each other.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations.  The panel discussion is open to United Nations and Permanent Mission staff, non-governmental organizations and the public.  United Nations grounds pass holders need not register.  All others, please, register by sending your name and affiliation to: Mr. Vikram Sura, Outreach Division, United Nations Department of Public Information, e-Mail:  sura@un.org, tel.:  1 212 963-8274, fax:  1 917 367-6075.
