Discussion to Feature Brian Urquhart, Jan Eliasson
This first in a series of lectures and conversations to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of former United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld will be held at UN Headquarters from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, 4 April 2005. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to launch the event, which will be held in Conference Room 4.
Titled “Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy and its relevance to the UN today”, it will feature a conversation with Sir Brian Urquhart, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and a close colleague of Dag Hammarskjöld, and Jan Eliasson, Sweden’s Ambassador to the United States and the endorsed candidate for the Presidency of the 60th General Assembly. The conversation will be moderated by UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Shashi Tharoor.
The series is being organized by the UN’s Dag Hammarskjöld Library with the support of the Government of Sweden. Four more events are planned for 2005, at which prominent speakers will discuss international responses to disasters, peacekeeping and conflict and crisis management, information and knowledge for global decision-making, and the International Civil Service.
Members of Permanent Missions, Secretariat staff, non-governmental organizations and the media are invited to attend.
