NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ECUADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Luis Benigno Gallegos, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 2 August 2005.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Gallegos was his country’s ambassador to Australia since and, before that, served as Ecuador’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2002-2005. He served as Ecuador’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from 1997 to 2000, holding the Vice-Presidency of the Human Rights Commission in 1998 and that of the Assembly of the Parts of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 1997 to 1999.
Mr. Gallegos was ambassador to El Salvador from 1994 to 1997 and Minister-Chargé d’affaires in Bulgaria from 1985 to 1989. Between 1979 and 1980 he served as Chargé d’affaires in Washington, D.C., and was Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States from 1978 to 1979. His other foreign postings include Madrid and Chicago. His diplomatic career began in 1966.
Born in Quito on 13 December 1946, Mr. Gallegos was educated at the University of Ecuador and received a Master of Arts from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is married and has two children.
