Biographical Note

new permanent representative of United States presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the United States, John R. Bolton, presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Bolton served as Undersecretary, Arms Control and International Security at the US Department of State from May 2001 to June 2005.  Before that appointment, he was Senior Vice-President of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a non-profit public policy centre.

Mr. Bolton has spent many years of his career in public service.  In 1989-1993, he was Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs at the Department of State; and in 1985-1989, Assistant Attorney General at the Department of Justice.  In 1982-1983, he held a position of Assistant Administrator for Programme and Policy Coordination at his country’s Agency for International Development, where he had also been a General Counsel in 1981-1982.

Mr. Bolton is also an attorney.  Having graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University and received his J.D. from Yale Law School, he started his career as an Associate at the Washington office of Convington & Burling in 1974-1981.  He returned as a member of that firm in 1983-1985, after public service at the United States Agency for International Development.  From 1993 through 1999, he was a partner in the law firm of Lerner, Reed, Bolton & McManus.

Mr. Bolton was born in Baltimore on November 20, 1948.
