NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MAURITANIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Mauritania to the United Nations, Mohamed Mahmoud Ould El Ghaouth, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Prior to his current appointment, in 2003-2004, Mr. Ould El Ghaouth was Ambassador, Chargé de Mission au Cabinet, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mauritania. Simultaneously, from 2003 to 2005, he was Chairman of the Committee on the Implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. In 2001-2002, he served as Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Mr. Ould El Ghaouth began his diplomatic career in 1975 as a Third Secretary at his country’s Embassy in Abidjan. From 1978 to 1981, he was Second Counsellor at the Embassy in Washington, D.C., and from 1982 to 1996, he served as First Counsellor at the Permanent Mission in New York.
From 1996 to 1997, he chaired the working group of the Committee that negotiated the Convention to Combat Desertification. During the period 1995-1997, he was a member of the Council of the Global Environmental Facility, where he represented the Sahel region, and he was also President of the subsidiary body for implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. From 1990 to 1998, he also was a member of the United Nations Committee on Contributions.
Mr. Ould El Ghaouth holds a BA in literature from the AmericanUniversity in Washington.
Born on 20 December 1952 in Kiffa, he is married, with four children.
