NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ECUADOR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, Jaime Moncayo, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Prior to his current appointment, from 2003, Mr. Moncayo served on the consultative board of Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2000 to 2001, he was the coordinator of the ALCA Unit (Area de Libre Comercio de las Américas) in the Ministry of Trade, and the World Bank project in the Ministry of External Commerce, Industrialization and Fisheries (MICIP).
In the context of the Ecuador-Peru peace negotiations, from 1999 to 2000, Mr. Moncayo was Ecuadorian coordinator for the Binational Commission on the Implementation of the Border Integration Accord Ecuador-Peru. He was also a consultant for the organization and preparation of the International Consultative Group on Financing for the Binational Plan for Border Development.
From 1988 to 1992, he was Ecuador’s Ambassador to the United States. From 1975 to 1979, he served as the First Permanent Secretary of the Latin American Economic System (SELA), having been unanimously elected to the position by 25 member countries. Mr. Moncayo served in numerous other capacities in his Government, including as Chef de Cabinet of the Ministry of Integration, Undersecretary of Revenue at the Ministry of Finance, and Ambassador of the Ecuadorian Foreign Service.
Mr. Moncayo received a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (1967). He also received an economics degree from the Central University of Ecuador.
Born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1940, Mr. Moncayo is married, with one daughter.
