Secretary-General welcomes agreement on action plan for darfur

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the agreement between his Special Representative for Sudan, Jan Pronk, and the Government of Sudan on an Action Plan for Darfur.

The Secretary-General attaches great importance to substantive and verifiable progress being made during the next 30 days towards restoring full security for the Darfur region, and he looks forward to swift and sustained action by the Government of Sudan to implement the commitments that have been entered into in the Action Plan and the Joint Communiqué of 3 July.
