SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS SUNIL NARULA DIRECTOR


OF UN INFORMATION CENTRE IN TEHRAN


Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Sunil Narula Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Tehran, Iran.  He took up his duties on 8 August 2004.


Mr. Narula, a national of India, has a long career in print journalism.  From 1982 to 1995, he worked for the newspaper The Times of India, first as city reporter in Mumbai and then as metro editor in New Delhi.  In 1992, he was assigned to Pakistan as a foreign correspondent, a position he held for two years before returning to India as a special correspondent for the newspaper.  He left The Times of India in 1995 to become foreign editor of Outlook, a weekly magazine based in New Delhi.  Mr. Narula joined the United Nations in 1999 as an information officer and later became the head of the press office of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.


Mr. Narula was educated in New Delhi and has a law degree (LLB), a master’s degree in English literature and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Delhi.
