Ashraf Jehangir Qazi of Pakistan appointed Special Representative for Iraq
The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Ashraf Jehangir Qazi of Pakistan as his Special Representative for Iraq.
Mr.Qazi’s appointment as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General comes after a long and distinguished career with the Pakistani diplomatic service.
Since September 2002, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi has been Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States in WashingtonD.C. Before that posting, he had been Pakistan's High Commissioner to India since 1997. He was Pakistan's Ambassador to China from 1994 to 1997. He also served as Ambassador to Russia (1991-1994), the then-East Germany (1990-1991) and Syria (1986-1988).
In addition, the new United Nations envoy held various diplomatic assignments in Copenhagen, Tokyo, Cairo, Tripoli and London.
Mr. Qazi was born in 1942. He is married with two children.
