Heads of six main organs of United Nations hold annual meeting
for overall review of current challenges
Secretary-General, Five Presidents Discuss Developments
On UN Reform, Improving Coordination, Preparations for Major Events of 2005
The Heads of the six Principal Organs of the United Nations (General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice and the Secretariat) held their sixth annual meeting in New York today. The meeting was followed by a luncheon hosted by the Secretary-General. The Secretary-General initiated this annual process in 1998 with a view to improving coordination among the Principal Organs as well as efficiency in the workings of the Organization.
The Secretary-General and the five Presidents exchanged views on important developments in the Principal Organs, including general United Nations reform, preparations for the major events in 2005 and current challenges faced by the Organization. The Research Director of the High-Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change, Stephen Stedman, briefed the meeting on progress in the work of the High-Level Panel and highlighted some of its major findings.
