Following is today’s press statement by Security Council President Heraldo Muñoz (Chile) on the Secretary-General’s appointment of his Special Envoy for Ethiopia-Eritrea:
Members of the Security Council welcome the Secretary-General’s appointment of Lloyd Axworthy, former Foreign Minister of Canada, as his Special Envoy for Ethiopia-Eritrea. Members of the Council, recalling the statement to the press made by the President of the Security Council on 7 January 2004, fully support the good offices mission in order to facilitate the implementation of the Algiers Agreement, the decision of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission, and the relevant resolutions and decisions of the Security Council, and to encourage the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two nations. They look forward to close cooperation with the Special Envoy.
