MEMORIAL SERVICE TO HONOUR FALLEN STAFF TO BE HELD
AT UN HEADQUARTERS ON STAFF DAY, 11 JUNE
On Friday, 11 June, the United Nations will observe Staff Day, an official function sponsored jointly by the United Nations Secretary-General and the Staff Union. Every year, Staff Day opens with a brief flag-raising ceremony to remember all personnel fallen in the service of the United Nations.
This year the ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the flagpole located on the Secretariat Circle near the Delegates’ Entrance of the General Assembly Hall. Lauro L. Baja, Jr., President of the Security Council, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, and Marilyn Manuel of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs will be among the speakers at the event.
The observance will end with staff members reading out the names of all personnel, both military and civilian, who have lost their lives since the last Staff Day.
The event is organized by the United Nations Staff Union. Members of permanent missions, agencies and organizations of the United Nations system, Secretariat staff, representatives of non-governmental organizations and the media are invited to attend.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the General Assembly Hall.
