NEW YORK FESTIVALS/UNDPI PUBLIC SERVICE ADVERTISING AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED
AT THE INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION ADVERTISING AWARDS SHOW
Public-Service Advertisements on Tobacco,
Environmental Protection, Peace, and Mental Illness Awareness to Receive Awards
Advertising agencies from the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the United States and Canada will be honoured for public-service advertising on Thursday evening, 29 January 2004, when the UNDPI Awards are presented at The New York Festivals TV Advertising Awards show at the Millennium Broadway Hotel. Raymond Sommereyns, Director, Outreach Division, Department of Public Information (DPI) will speak at the awards presentation.
The UNDPI Awards are presented annually and are jointly sponsored by DPI and The New York Festivals. They were established in 1990 to honour public-service advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.
This year’s panel of judges reviewed work dealing with such United Nations-related issues as HIV/AIDS, literacy, indigenous issues and traffic safety. The judges selected four public-service advertisements/campaigns -- two print, one television and one radio -- to receive awards.
A print advertisement and a print campaign shared the Gold UNDPI Award. The Classic Partnership Advertising, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, won for “Loading Cancer”, a print advertisement against tobacco use for Khaleeji Magazine; and Young & Rubicam Brazil, São Paulo, won for “Little Red Riding Hood/Mermaid/Duck”, a print campaign on environmental protection for Greenpeace. The Silver UNDPI Award went to Collaborate, San Francisco, California, United States, for “Imagine –- Full”, a television advertisement on world peace created for Amnesty International. The winner of the Bronze UNDPI Award was Arnold Worldwide Canada, Toronto, Canada, for “911”, a radio advertisement on mental illness awareness, produced for the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation.
In addition to the winners, the following companies will be honoured as finalists: Advico Young & Rubicam (Switzerland), Arnold Worldwide (United States), Chrysalis Radio (Midlands) (England) and Leo Burnett Company (United States).
