Economic and Social Council fills vacancies on subsidiary bodies


The Economic and Social Council this afternoon, in a resumed organizational session preceding the opening of its high-level segment next Monday, filled vacancies on seven of its subsidiaries, including the Commission on Population and Development, the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), among others.


The Council elected, by acclamation:


-- Armenia, Belgium and Switzerland as members of the Commission on Population and Development for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2005;


-- Monaco as a member of the Commission for Social Development for a four-year term beginning at the forty-fourth session of the Commission and expiring at the close of its forty-seventh session in 2009; and


-- Slovakia as a member of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2005.


Turning to two vacancies on the Executive Board of the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, the Council elected the CzechRepublic and Romania for terms, beginning immediately and expiring on 31 December 2006.


France was elected by acclamation to the Programme Coordination Board of UNAIDS for a three-year term beginning 1 January 2005.


As it took action on the upcoming vacancies on the Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the Council elected, by acclamation, Norway, Slovakia and Trinidad and Tobago for four-year terms beginning on 1 January 2005.


Filling the upcoming vacancy on the Committee for Programme and Coordination, the Council nominated Jamaica for election by the General Assembly for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2005.


The elections to fill remaining vacancies were further postponed, pending consultations in relevant groups of States.
