ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL RESCHEDULES SOCIAL FORUM, FILLS VACANCIES


ON EXECUTIVE BOARDS OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTE, WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME


In a brief meeting this afternoon, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) decided that the “Social Forum”, previously scheduled to meet from 3 to 4 May, would meet from 22 to 23 July 2004, immediately before the session of the Subcommission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.


Also this afternoon, the Council elected Burkina Faso, Iran and Nigeria to the Executive Board of the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) to serve for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2006.  Regarding remaining vacancies on the Board, the Council decided to postpone the election of two members from Eastern European States.


The Council also elected Denmark to replace Norway on the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP), for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2006.


In other action, the Council took note of the consolidated report of the Secretary-General on the work of ECOSOC’s functional commissions in 2003 contained in document E/2003/90 and Addendum 1, as well as the Secretary-General’s report on the follow-up to its agreed conclusions 2002/1 contained in document E/2003/74.


The ECOSOC will meet again at a date and time to be announced.
