SECRETARY-GENERAL CONVENES SUMMIT WITH CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS, NGOS AND LABOUR AT HEADQUARTERS ON 24 JUNE
Press Release ECO/66/Rev. 1* |
Secretary-General convenes summit with Chief Executive Officers,
NGOs and Labour at headquarters on 24 june
NEW YORK, 22 June -- More than 400 Chief Executive Officers and representatives of international civil society will discuss a range of issues key to corporate leadership and responsibility at a meeting called by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to take place at United Nations Headquarters on 24 June.
Corporate leaders, representatives of international civil society and labour organizations, who are participating in the Secretary-General’s “Global Compact” with business, will discuss:
-- How universal standards on environment, labour and human rights relate to the role of businesses in a period of rapid globalization and rising international tensions;
-- The relation between corporate responsibility and profitability, and how investment institutions and rating agencies should take it into account;
-- Establishing effective cross-communication with organized labour and civil society.
New voluntary initiatives by individual firms or business associations will be announced at the one-day Global Compact Leaders Summit, chaired by Secretary-General Annan.
The Secretary-General will announce the addition of anti-corruption as one of the core principles of the Compact, along with support for the environment, labour standards and human rights; a statement will be made by United Nations Under-Secretary-General Catherine Bertini on incorporating these principles into the administration of the Organization system-wide; there will be a statement of support for Global Compact principles from several national stock exchanges; and a major initiative by the world’s leading financial institutions will be announced.
In recognition of the overlapping goals and problems of business and governments, the 24 June meeting will also be attended by more than a dozen national ministers, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil will deliver the keynote luncheon address.
United Nations officials project that the Summit will be the largest gathering ever on corporate social responsibility issues, and perhaps the most important to bring together business, labour, civil society and government.
Taking place four years since the founding Global Compact convocation, the Summit marks the growth of the initiative from slightly more than 50 participating firms and organizations in July 2000 to nearly 1,500 now.
