Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF Palau PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Stuart Beck, the new Permanent Representative of Palau to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


From 1987 until his current appointment, Mr. Beck was President of Granite Broadcasting Corporation, a public company headquartered in New York, of which he was co-founder.


Prior to that, Mr. Beck practised law from 1971 until 1987, in Washington, D.C., and New York City.  Firms included Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C., as well as Wall & Beck and Richenthal, Birnbaum & Beck in New York, New York.


As Chief Council to the Palau Political Status Commission from 1977 until 1980, he assisted the Commission in achieving sovereignty for his country.


Mr. Beck received an A.B. from HarvardCollege in 1968, and his Juris Doctorate from YaleLawSchool in 1971.  He was admitted to practise before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1981.


Born in 1946 in New York City, Mr. Beck lives in Bronxville, New York, with his wife and four children.
