Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAWI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Brown B. Chimphamba, the new Permanent Representative of Malawi to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Chimphamba served as Presidential Advisor on Education and Chairman of the National AIDS Commission from 2000 to 2004.  He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi from 1992 to 2000.  From 1991 to 1992, he served simultaneously as Principal of Malawi Polytechnic and acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi.

From 1981 to 1990, Mr. Chimphamba was the Principal of Bunda College of Agriculture, which, like the Malawi Polytechnic, is a constituent college of the University of Malawi.  Between 1961 and 1981, he served in various capacities, including as Research Associate, Senior Lecturer and Professor of Biology, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Science.

Mr. Chimphamba has a PhD in Botany from the University College of London, an honorary doctorate degree of Letters from the University of Malawi, a master’s degree in Botany from the same university, and a bachelor’s degree in Botany from FourahBayCollege, University of Sierra Leone.  He is also a Fulbright Hayes Fellow and a recipient of several national honours, including a Certificate of Merit for Development Work.  Additionally, he has written numerous scientific publications.

Mr. Chimphamba was born in Ntcheu in Malawi in 1939, is married and has four children.
