NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIBVE OF CUBA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Orlando Requeijo Gual, the new Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Until his current appointment, from 2001, Mr. Requeijo Gual served as his mission’s Deputy Permanent Representative.  He was Director, Middle East and North Africa Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1998 to 2001, and in 2000 served as Presidential Special Envoy in eight States of the Persian Gulf and the ArabicPeninsula.  From 1994 to 1998, he was Cuba’s ambassador to Qatar.


Mr. Requeijo Gual entered the Foreign Service in 1981 as internal officer at the Cuban Embassy in Damascus, Syria.  Since then, he has worked in various capacities in the Middle East and North Africa Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was that Division’s Deputy Director from 1993 until 1994.


Mr. Requeijo Gual graduated in International Relations from the Higher Institute on International Relations “Raul Roa Carcia”, Havana, and attended the Institute for the Learning of Arabic Language for Foreigners in Damascus, Syria.


Born in 1957 in Havana, he is married with two children.
