OR ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS TO VISIT SUDAN

GENEVA, 7 May (Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights) -- The Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights on the issue of extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Asma Jahangir, will visit the Sudan from 2 to 12 June 2004.  The visit, which comes at the request of the Special Rapporteur, has been agreed upon by the Sudanese Government.


The Special Rapporteur will start her visit in Khartoum.  She is also scheduled to visit the Upper Nile province, as well as the Darfur region.


During her visit, Ms. Jahangir will meet government officials, local authorities, international agencies, representatives of the civil society, as well as witnesses and victims of alleged human rights violations, and other private individuals.


On completion of the mission, Ms. Jahangir will prepare a report to be presented to the Commission on Human Rights.


Ms. Jahangir, an advocate at the Supreme Court of Pakistan, was appointed Special Rapporteur in August 1998 by the Commission on Human Rights.  Since then, she has carried out a number of field visits, including visits to Mexico, East Timor, Nepal, Turkey and Honduras, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania in connection with the Kosovo conflict, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Jamaica and Brazil.
