EXPERT MEETING ON WORLD CRIME AND JUSTICE REPORT TO BE HELD 26 - 28 JUNE
(Reissued as received.)
VIENNA, 25 June (UN Information Service) -- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) will jointly organize an expert meeting on the World Crime and Justice Report, 2004-2005, on 26-28 June at the CRT Foundation in Turin, Italy.
Some 45 distinguished experts from 29 countries across five continents will debate the prospective outline and contents of the Report, which will fill an important gap in the literature dealing with contemporary developments in global crime, criminal justice, corruption and terrorism.
The United Nations system already produces a series of publications on global phenomena, such as development, health and illicit drugs. These reports, which are released at regular intervals, offer a comprehensive overview of a particular topic.
The World Crime and Justice Report, 2004-2005, will likewise provide a review of the most recent developments in global crime, as well as highlight new and interesting areas of debate and research. The Report will also act as a key reference point for the trends in global crime, corruption and criminal justice.
The Report’s aim is not to present an academic overview of the available literature, but a review of international developments, including the identification of new policy approaches.
The data provided will largely reflect those of the UN Survey of Crime Trends and Criminal Justice Systems and the International Crime Survey, supplemented by other applicable information from other relevant organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) or INTERPOL.
In addition, the Report will draw on the resources of world key experts in a number of identified areas, as well as on the work already conducted at UNODC, UNICRI and the other institutes of the UN Crime Programme Network.
At the end of the three-day meeting, the Report-implementation phase will start and continue until its presentation at the United Nations Eleventh World Crime Congress to take place in Bangkok in April 2005.
