SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JOSE LUIS MACHINEA OF ARGENTINA EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
OF ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR LATIN AMERICA, CARIBBEAN
The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of José Luis Machinea of Argentina as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
A former Minister of Economy of Argentina from December 1999 to February 2001, José Luis Machinea has had a long and distinguished career in both the private and public sectors. During the 1990s, in addition to his work as a consultant to the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank, he served as President of the Argentine Foundation for Development with Equity (Fundación Argentina para el Desarollo con Equidad) (1998-1999), a think tank on Argentine economic and social issues, and as Director of Research of the Industrial Development Institute of the Argentine Industrial Union (1992-1997). Moreover, in his capacity as President of a consultant firm (1995-99), he advised private companies on macroeconomic, monetary, and financial issues.
During the 1980s, Mr. Machinea served over five years in government as the President of Argentina's Central Bank, Undersecretary of Political Economy, and Undersecretary of Planning. Earlier, he was the Chief of the Public Finance Department and Chief of the Research Department at the Central Bank.
Mr. Machinea holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous articles published in journals and books on macroeconomics, monetary, and financial issues. He is also a frequent speaker on macroeconomic and monetary issues at roundtables, seminars, and panels in both the United States and Latin America. He has taught macroeconomic, banking and monetary policy in several graduate courses and has been a professor of macroeconomics at Argentina’s Catholic University.
Currently, Mr. Machinea is a Special Expert in Integration and Trade in the Integration and Regional Department at the Inter-American Development Bank and a member of the External Advisory Group established by the Bank’s president to review Bank activities and reflect its future role in the region.
