SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS BEHROOZ SADRY OF IRAN DEPUTY SPECIAL

REPRESENTATIVE FOR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The Secretary-General has appointed Behrooz Sadry as Deputy Special Representative for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  Mr. Sadry has a distinguished career with the United Nations, and has most recently served as the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Sierra Leone.  He assumed his functions in Kinshasa on 17 February.

Prior to his appointment in Sierra Leone, he was Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Angola from November 1997 to July 1998.  Between August 1996 and July 1998, Mr. Sadry served as Senior Advisor in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), prior to which he was Assistant Secretary-General for Management and Coordination in the United Nations Peace Forces in the former Yugoslavia from August 1995.

From January to December 1994, Mr. Sadry served as the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Mozambique, and held the same position in Cambodia from March 1992 to October 1993.  Prior to that, he was Director of the Field Operations Division (1987-1992), and Director of Personnel Administration at United Nations Headquarters in New York (1983-1987).

Born in Tehran, Iran on 11 February 1936, Mr. Sadry joined the United Nations in 1957 after the completion of his studies in France.  His wide experience in peacekeeping began with service in the United Nations Congo operation between 1960 and 1962.
