PRESS STATEMENT ON CENTRAL AFRICA BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Following is the press statement on Central Africa by Security Council President Adolfo Aguilar Zinser (Mexico):

Members of the Council heard a briefing by the Assistant Secretary-General, Tuliameni Kalomoh.

Members of the Council have reiterated the importance of a comprehensive, integrated, resolute and concerted approach to the issues of peace, security and development in Central Africa.

They welcomed the intention of the Secretary-General to dispatch a multidisciplinary mission to Central Africa to assess the implementation of that approach, as requested by the Security Council’s Presidential Statement of
31 October 2002 (document S/PRST/2002/31).

They invited the Secretary-General to submit to the Security Council at the end of that mission a report with recommendations on measures to be taken for the implementation of that global approach.

Members of the Council welcomed the ongoing consultations between the Secretariat and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) for the preparation of the mission and the decision to associate this institution to the said mission as well.

They expressed their support to the proposals made by the Secretary-General to strengthen the coordination between the diverse structures of the United Nations in the countries of the subregion and to promote the strengthening of the partnership between the United Nations system and Central African States.
