PRESS STATEMENT BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

ON ASSASSINATION OF SERBIA’S PRIME MINISTER

Following is the press statement on the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister, delivered today by Security Council President Mamady Traoré (Guinea):

Council members learned with grief about the assassination earlier today of Zoran Djindjic, Serbian Prime Minister.  As a leading Serbian politician during the last decade, he contributed enormously to the democratization of his country.

Council members strongly condemned this assassination and urged that the perpetrators of this cowardly crime be brought to justice as quickly as possible.

Council members expressed their deepest condolences to the Government and people of Serbia, and in particular to Mr. Djindjic’s family.  They also expressed their support for and confidence in the people of Serbia in this difficult time.
