LIBRARIES IN DENMARK, INDIA, REPUBLIC OF KOREA, UNITED STATES AND ZAMBIA

DESIGNATED UNITED NATIONS DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES

Five libraries, located in Denmark, India, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Zambia, have been designated United Nations depository libraries, becoming part of an international network of 408 libraries in 145 countries and territories that brings United Nations documents and publications to users around the world.  They are Roskilde University Library (Roskilde, Denmark), NALSAR University of Law Library (Hyderabad, India), the Central Library at Suwon Campus of Kyung Hee University (Suwon, Republic of Korea), Barry University School of Law Library (Orlando, Florida, United States) and The Copperbelt University Library (Kitwe, Zambia).

Roskilde University Library, the second United Nations depository library in Denmark, is taking over the United Nations collection currently located at the United Nations Information Centre in Copenhagen, which dates back to 1946.  Current documents are received electronically.  Established in 1972, the Library serves as university, research and public library.

NALSAR University of Law Library, in Hyderabad, becomes the second United Nations depository library in Hyderabad and the fourteenth in India.  Founded in 1998 by an act of the Andhra Pradesh State legislature, NALSAR University of Law offers courses and training in law and undertakes consultancy services for the state government in law-related research and preparation of draft legislation.

The Central Library at Suwon Campus of Kyung Hee University, the ninth United Nations depository library in the Republic of Korea, serves students and faculty members of the integrated programme designed to educate leaders and experts in international affairs, international trade and other areas.

Established in 2001, the Library of the Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law, Barry University, is adding an international emphasis to its collection.  The United Nations collection will be maintained by a librarian who already has experience in United Nations documentation.

The Copperbelt University, located in the second largest city in Zambia, recently established the Dag Hammarskjöld UNESCO Chair of Peace, Human Rights and Conflict Management with the aim of promoting peace and stability in the region and providing education for peace and human rights.  The Library is working to acquire materials to support the objectives of the Chair.

Since 1946, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library at United Nations Headquarters in New York, which is part of the Department of Public Information (DPI), has arranged for the distribution of United Nations documents and publications to users around the world through its depository library system.  At present, there are 408 United Nations depository libraries:  55 are located in Africa, 113 in Asia and the Pacific, 19 in Western Asia, 33 in Eastern Europe, 78 in Western Europe, 51 in Latin America and the Caribbean and 59 in North America.  These libraries receive United Nations materials, with the understanding that their collections will be maintained in good order and made available to the general public free of charge.
