LECTURE ON FUTURE OF PEACEKEEPING, MEDIATION TO BE HELD ON 20 NOVEMBER,
SECOND IN SERIES HONOURING LEGACY OF RALPH BUNCHE
The United Nations Department of Public Information, in association with the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies of the City University of New York Graduate Center, is hosting a three-part lecture series to mark the birth centenary of Ralph Bunche and to honour his legacy. The second of these, titled “From Ralph Bunche to Lakhdar Brahimi: The Future of Peacekeeping and Mediation”, will be held on Thursday, 20 November 2003.
David Malone, President, International Peace Academy, will be the keynote speaker. He will be joined by two discussants: Ambassador Kishore Mahbubani, Permanent Representative of Singapore to the United Nations, and Dame Margaret Anstee, former Under-Secretary-General, who served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Angola and Chief, United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM III).
The third and final lecture, titled “Ralph Bunche and the Integrity of the International Civil Service”, will be held on 5 February 2004. The keynote speaker will be James O.C. Jonah, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Senior Fellow, Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies. Catherine Bertini, Under-Secretary-General for Management, will be the principal discussant.
The programmes will be held in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium from 1 to 3 p.m. Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will introduce the programme to be moderated by Sir Brian Urquhart, former Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs.
Members of permanent missions, Secretariat staff, representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and the media are invited to attend and to join in the discussion following the presentations.
Please note that a comprehensive exhibit on the life of Ralph Bunche is on display in the Public Lobby until 22 November 2003.
