UN SPECIAL ENVOY TO LAUNCH ART EXHIBIT ON IMPACT

OF CONFLICT ON CHILDREN ON 6 NOVEMBER

The launch of an exhibition of artwork and memoirs by young people growing up after war and terror, co-presented by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and the Children's Movement for Creative Education, will take place on Thursday, 6 November 2003, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the United Nations Visitors’ Lobby.

“Aftershocks:  Art and Memoir on Growing Up in the Aftermath” is a powerful exhibit which features artwork and writing made by children and adolescents in Sarajevo, Lukavica and New York City over the last two years.  The exhibit speaks movingly about the lasting impact of violence and conflict on young people.

Under-Secretary-General Olara A. Otunnu, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict will be a keynote speaker at the launch.  The exhibit will be on view at the United Nations until 26 November 2003.

The Children’s Movement for Creative Education (CMCE) is a small, New York-based not-for-profit organization.  The CMCE began implementing creative trauma-relief projects with elementary school children in New York after 11 September 2001, and with youth in Bosnia in 2002.
