UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON ADEQUATE HOUSING TO VISIT PERU

The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Miloon Kothari, will visit Peru starting next week at the invitation of the Government.

During the field mission, set to last from 3 to 14 March, the Special Rapporteur will examine the status of realization of the right to adequate housing and other related rights in the country, with particular attention to aspects of gender equality and non-discrimination.   He will hold a dialogue with Government, the United Nations and other international agencies, and civil society about their efforts to secure these rights; and identify practical solutions and best practices in the realization of rights related to his mandate.

Among the high-level national and local officials the Special Rapporteur is scheduled to meet while in Peru are the Ministers of Housing and of Women and Social Development, the Vice Minister of Justice and the Mayor of Lima.

The Special Rapporteur will also visit communities in Lima, Iquitos and Ica to assess housing and living conditions, with particular attention to the needs of the poor, the rights of women, children, minorities, migrants and indigenous peoples.  He will also hold hearings to listen to experiences of community groups.

Mr. Kothari, an architect by training, was appointed special rapporteur in September 2000 through Commission resolution 2000/9.  He will present preliminary findings of his mission to the fifty-ninth session of the Commission, to be held in Geneva from 17 March to 25 April 2003.
