GENERAL ASSEMBLY ELECTS CANADA TO PROGRAMME AND COORDINATION COMMITTEE
The General Assembly this morning elected Canada to the Committee for Programme and Coordination for a term starting today and expiring 31 December 2005.
On 4 November 2002, the Assembly elected 19 members to the Committee to three-year terms beginning 1 January 2003 (see Press Release GA/10094 of that date). One vacancy from the Western European and Other States group had remained open. At its resumed organizational session for 2003, on 29 April, the Economic and Social Council nominated Canada for that vacancy.
The elected members on 4 November were: Benin, Central African Republic, Gabon and South Africa from the African States Group; India, Indonesia, Iran and Pakistan from the Asian States Group; Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine from the Eastern European States Group; Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Nicaragua from the Latin American and Caribbean States group; and Germany, Monaco, Switzerland and United Kingdom from the Western European and other States group.
The Assembly was informed that Chad had paid the necessary dues to reduce its arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the Charter. That Article specifies that a member shall have no vote in the General Assembly if the amount of its arrears equals or exceeds the amount of the contributions due from it for the preceding two full years.
